Soft cover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Original January 1929 issue of the Journal of Philosophical Studies, Vol. IV, No. 13, edited by Sydney E. Hooper and published quarterly for the British Institute of Philosophical Studies by Macmillan and Co., London. Complete through p. 154 and retaining the original printed wrappers together with contemporary advertising matter. Of particular interest is Olaf Stapledon's "The Location of Physical Objects," pp. 64-75, an early and substantial philosophical paper by Stapledon, published the year before Last and First Men (1930) established his reputation as one of the most distinctive speculative writers of the twentieth century. The paper belongs to Stapledon's serious philosophical work rather than his later fiction and addresses the ontological problem of what it means for a physical object to occupy a determinate region of space. Cambridge records the article as appearing in this exact issue, Vol. 4, No. 13, January 1929, pp. 64-75. Stapledon begins from the apparently straightforward common-sense conception of an object as occupying a definite spatial region before bringing this conception into confrontation with A. N. Whitehead's critique of "simple location." Using the seemingly mundane example of a penny, he investigates whether the being of an object can genuinely be confined to the volume conventionally assigned to it, drawing Berkeley and problems of perception into an argument concerned with the relation between sensible qualities, physical existence and spatial location. The paper consequently has particular interest for collectors concerned with Stapledon beyond his science fiction, as well as readers of Whitehead, metaphysics and the philosophy of perception. Also particularly significant is C. Lloyd Morgan's "The Case for Emergent Evolution," pp. 23-38. Morgan was already closely associated with the philosophical formulation of emergent evolution, and this 1929 paper returns explicitly to the distinction between an "emergent" and a "resultant", tracing the terminology back to George Henry Lewes. The article remains cited in later philosophical literature on emergence and represents another substantial contribution in this single issue. Further contents include W. G. de Burgh, "Gentile's Philosophy of the Spirit"; William Brown, "Religion and Science"; John Laird, "The Possibility of Rationalism in Ethics"; C. Delisle Burns, "The Philosophy of Social Life"; and C. E. M. Joad, "The One and the Many," followed by the Philosophical Survey, New Books and Institute Notes. The issue therefore provides an unusually concentrated cross-section of British philosophical discussion at the end of the 1920s, encompassing idealism, emergent evolution, philosophy of science, ethics and metaphysics. Original printed wrappers present. The spine is considerably worn, with losses of wrapper material, splitting and exposed gatherings in places; wrappers have edge wear, creasing, age-toning and general handling marks. Memorial College, Brecon institutional stamps appear on the front wrapper, opening page and rear wrapper. Despite the external wear, the contents remain together and the interior is substantially cleaner than the wrappers suggest. Contemporary publisher's advertisements survive, including advertisements for philosophical, theological and psychological publications. An uncommon original issue with considerable interest through the conjunction of Stapledon's early metaphysics and Lloyd Morgan's mature statement of emergent evolution, retaining its original wrappers and advertising matter.…

Fifth, best and most complete editon of this work which forced the author into exile while his property was confiscated.Jean Baptiste Claude Isouard, writing as Delisle de Sales, published in 1766 his De la Philosophie de la Nature which caused a scandal for professing atheism and nihilism. The work was condamned to be burned, the author imprisoned and the censor exiled. Delisle filed for appeal and was supported by the whole circle of the philosophes who saw in him the champion of the liberty of thought and expression. The trial became a "cause célébre" in Europe: instead of an attack on the philosophes in general, which was the hidden agenda of the magistrates and Jansenists, the reading public appeared sympathetic to the ideas of the philosophes and turned Delisle's book into one of the greatest bestsellers of the century and made him an international celebrity. The magistrates and Parlement became the source of ridicule and outcry: swallowing the bitter pill, Parlement suspended Delisle's banishment and granted amnesty in 1777. The first edition of only three volumes was published in 1766 and it took the authorities some time to discover that the book was "matérialiste" and "spinoziste".…
