Seller: Bloomsbury Books, Las Vegas, NV, U.S.A.
Manuscript / Paper Collectible First Edition
Stapled Wraps. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Offered is an original statement entitled "To Those Who Would Start a People's Party" written by Barbara Deming. An upper-left-corner-stapled position paper measuring 8-1/2" by 11" and containing six pages (including the blank verso). Although no date or publisher, this paper was published in 1974 by the National Interim Committee for a Mass Party of the People (MPOC) and is in response to Arthur Kinoy's position paper "Toward a Party of the People." A few brief excerpts: "In the paper in which Arthur Kinoy proposes a mass party of the people, he states that 'at the party's very core' there must be an understanding of 'the unique quality of the struggle for Black freedom in this country.' The role of the Black struggle is indeed special. But there is another struggle which is now gaining momentum and which the analysis put forward by a People's Party must not slight or it will be fatally weakened: the struggle of 'another tribe' (as Abigail Adams once called us) 'more numerous and powerful than all the rest' - a tribe which includes more than half of those in the Black struggle, and more than half of the people in this country: women. All that Arthur says of the Black struggle could be said of women's struggle." "Let me list the four key demands 'for an alternative system' that Shulamith Firestone would include in a revolutionary program. I endorse them - with one exception, which I'll note: (1) THE FREEING OF WOMEN FROM THE TYRANNY OF THEIR BIOLOGY BY ANY MEANS AVAILABLE, AND THE DIFFUSION OF THE CHILD-BEARING AND CHILDREARING ROLE TO THE SOCIETY AS A WHOLE, TO MEN AND OTHER CHILDREN AS WELL AS WOMEN. ["Childbearing could be taken over by technology," she suggests, for "pregnancy is barbaric." This is the one point on which I find it impossible to agree with her. I would restate this demand: THE DIFFUSION OF THE CHILDREARING ROLE TO THE SOCIETY AS A WHOLE, TO MEN AND OTHER CHILDREN AS WELL AS WOMEN]; (2) THE ECONOMIC INDEPENDENCE AND SELF-DETERMINATION OF ALL; (3) THE TOTAL INTEGRATION OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN INTO THE LARGER SOCIETY; (4) FREE SEXUALITY." Staple lightly age-rusted. Rare.
