USS Congress (1841)-the fourth United States Navy ship to carry that name-was a sailing frigate, like her predecessor, USS Congress (1799). Congress served in the Mediterranean, South Atlantic Ocean, and in the Pacific Ocean. She continued to operate as an American warship until the Civil War, when she was sunk by the ironclad CSS Virginia in battle of Newport News, Virginia. Congress was recommissioned on September 15, 1845, as flagship of Commodore Robert F. Stockton and sailed for the Pacific Ocean in late October. After landing the U.S. Commissioner to the Sandwich Islands at Honolulu, Hawaii on June 10, she sailed to Monterey Bay where she joined the Pacific Squadron. Long list of persons mentioned, including John Tyler, Martin Van Buren, King Kamehameha, James K. Polk, and Matthew Maury The author's father was U.S. Consul-General to Hawaii; they sailed in 1845 in the U.S. Frigate "Congress. " Samuel Francis Du Pont was on this vessel with the rank of Commander during the voyaged described in this memoir. Samuel Francis Du Pont (September 27, 1803 - June 23, 1865) was a rear admiral in the United States Navy, and a member of the prominent Du Pont family. In the Mexican-American War, Du Pont captured San Diego, and was made commander of the California naval blockade. . In the American Civil War, he played a major role in making the Union blockade effective, but was controversially blamed for the failed attack on Charleston, South Carolina in April 1863. He returned to service in 1845 as commander of the Congress, the flagship of Commodore Robert Stockton, reaching California by way of a cruise of the Hawaiian Islands by the time the Mexican-American War had begun.…
