Wrappers. Condition: Very Good. 292 pages. Paperback. Primary texts in Croatian (translations of essays into French). There are some bumps and wear to the corners, with small associated tears to the cover at the spine. It is possible that the pageblock as it exists now has been restored to its current solid and tight state. The glossy stiff white paper French fold cover is attached to the pageblock, although pulling a bit at the back. The cover folds down from the spine, possibly by design. Numerous black and white photographic reproductions. The presence of a checklist seems to indicate that this was an exhibition catalogue. Not reading Croatian, I am at a disadvantage to adequately describe the contents of this scarce title, but it appears to examine a time when Surrealism and Social Realism merged in Yugoslavia. Artists examined are little known in the West, but include Ivan Cargo, Marko Celebonovic, Marijan Detoni, Vojo Dimitrijevic, Alenka Gerlovic, Sergije Glumac, Ismet Mujezinovic, and many others. Of particular interest to us is the inclusion of 7 pictured Cadavre Exquis (Exquisite Corpses) by artists with whom we were unfamiliar. All essays appear to be well footnoted and of a scholarly nature. Biographies of the artists, an extensive cultural chronology of the years examined, and a bibliography are included, but sadly not translated into French as the essays are.
