A very nice copy of the First Edition Russian caricature work. A rare item. With a foreword by A. Lunatscharsky. Original soft cream covers. There is a touch of marking to them, and a little nicking / edgewear to the soft covers. Small repair to the corner of the rear panel. Internally clean and tidy, with just a touch of darkening to the pages. First edition of 1500 copies. An early Soviet Russian propaganda document full of political caricatures. Text in Russian, German, French and English. A range of enemies include Fascism and Mussolini (but a little early for Hitler). There is a notable abscence of caricatures of Stalin. Denis (Denisov) Viktor Nikolaevich (1893-1946) was one of the earliest Soviet poster artists and visual propagandists. Originally the son of an impoverished Russian nobleman, he joined to Socialist cause early. He followed the party line from Leninism to Stalinism, and was a central part of dehumanising Stalin's political opponents through to the anti Nazi campaign in the second world war. 175 pages. 31cm x 23cm. .

Condition: Very Good. Original color lithograph and stencil. Measures 29 ½" x 23 ½". Modest toning, very good or better. A striking wartime Soviet propaganda poster designed by Viktor Deni in the immediate aftermath of the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union. A Red Army soldier wields a bayonet-broom that will "Completely Sweep Away the [Nazi] Scum". Emblazoned on the bayonets are the names of 11 liberated Soviet cities, four of which are located in present day Ukraine: Kharkov, Melitopol, Chernigov, and Poltava. The Russian satirist, cartoonist, and poster artist Viktor Deni was one of the leading agitprop poster artists of the Bolshevik period, and is considered "one of the founders of the Soviet political poster". A scarce, dramatic example of his poster art, created when the Russians were fighting "the good war" against Nazi Germany.
