Un anno dopo la conquista dell'Everest, una spedizione interamente italiana conquistava la seconda vetta più alta del pianeta, al termine di un'impresa alpinistica straordinaria. Per un paese…appena uscito dagli orrori e dalle difficoltà della guerra, la conquista del K2 seguita quasi in diretta attraverso la radio rappresentò un motivo d'orgoglio nazionale e forse il segnale che una pagina difficile della nostra storia era definitivamente chiusa. Fu un'impresa memorabile, a causa delle difficoltà logistiche, delle scarse conoscenze geografiche e meteorologiche dell'epoca, delle difficoltà tecniche. Grazie a un'organizzazione impeccabile, all'uso delle tecnologie più avanzate del tempo e a un travolgente spirito di avventura, la spedizione guidata da Ardito Desio riuscì a raggiungere il suo obiettivo. Appena rientrato dalle vette del Karakorum, lo stesso Desio volle raccontare quelle settimane indimenticabili, le speranze, i momenti difficili e quelli tragici. Il suo resoconto è quello di una grande, autentica avventura, vissuta sempre con lo spirito dello scienziato. La descrizione della scalata, che Desio seguì interamente dal campo base, è infatti solo una parte del libro. Ampio spazio è dedicato sia alla geografia e alla geologia del Karakorum sia soprattutto alla preparazione di una spedizione «pesante», che comportò il reperimento e l'impiego di ingenti quantità di materiali e la movimentazione di centinaia di uomini. Questo aspetto è assai importante per comprendere le differenze fra l'alpinismo di oggi e quello di un tempo, rendendo il libro non solo un classico dell'alpinismo, ma anche uno straordinario documento storico.
