A very good copy with ample margins. Second, substantially expanded edition of the history of the University of Louvain, with copious information on the various colleges and faculty, including the professors' published works. The very scarce first edition was published by Olivier and Coenenstijn in 1635. As noted in an early annotation at the front pastedown, the work was eventually placed on the Roman Catholoc Index of prohibited books. A professor of Hebrew and of law at the Academy of Louvain, Valerius Andreas Desselius (1588-1655) served in his later years as the Academy's librarian. Provenance: Engraved heraldic bookplate at front pastedown (Duke of Arenberg/Elector of Northeim?); contemporary (1672?) dated owner's entry and old library stamp at fore-margin title; manuscript annotations in same hand at pp. 372 amidst the discussion of controversy between the Louvain faculty of theology and Jesuit professors Collation: [rev. paren.]4, 2[rev. paren.]2, A-3E4 (= 210 leaves).
