Devon Morales arranged this boisterous, carnival romp with lightness and frivolity at Level 3. Students will enjoy performing chromatic scales, hooked bows, and triplet 16th notes to create a playful rendition of a march which was said to have been admired by John Philip Sousa. Morales' instrumentation provides a clarity to this march, allowing the melody to shine through while the other voices bounce along underneath. No Binding. Condition: Fair. 9 X 12 inches. Front cover is almost torn away but hanging on. Handle with care! Otherwise, some mild wear and pencil notation on pages 5-7 of the 5-page score (pp 3-7). Related publisher ad on the rear cover for piano compositions of Nathaniel Dett. Copyright dates 1913 and 1941, but this appears to be a later printing than 1941. Juba is the most popular movement of In the Bottoms, a five-movement suite that combines the Romantic style of European classical music with African American folk idioms. Juba is based on a traditional African American plantation dance that involves stomping, slapping, and clapping the body.

Pp.3-7 plus a full page introductory note by the composer and a terminal publisher's ad; 12x9 inch self-wraps, two folio leaves folded and nested without fastening, the outer pair having serious splits to spinefold and some toning and dust-soil. Cover bears the faint old rubber-stamp impression of a music outlet in Portland Oregon. Nathaniel Dett was an African American composer/arranger best known for his work with the spirituals. Dett contributes about 600 words on the piece and its background inside front cover; "'juba' is the stamping on the ground with the foot and following it with two staccato pats of the hands in two-four time".
