Son auteur, alors parfaitement inconnu, ne passe pas inaperçu. Rapidement, il parvient à publier ses oeuvres étranges, d'abord dans A…rts, Hara-Kiri et différentes revues marginales, puis dans la "grande presse". Sa notoriété ne fait que grandir. Il devient un auteur protéiforme et boulimique, un personnage public, s'adonnant à la littérature, au théâtre, au cinéma, à la chanson, exposant dans les galeries d'art, participant à des émissions télévisées. Dans la presse, Topor se donne sans compter, car à ses yeux un journal a autant de valeur qu'un musée, un film ou un livre d'art. Plus le journal se veut libre, plus Topor en abuse ; plus il est ordinaire, plus Topor est extraordinaire. Pour autant, ses dessins ne seront jamais "populaires". Ils provoquent souvent le malaise et l'incompréhension - ce qui les rend d'autant plus admirables. Topor, dessinateur de presse est le premier livre consacré exclusivement à ses interventions, quarante ans durant, dans les revues, quotidiens et magazines plus ou moins confidentiels du monde entier. On y retrouve toute sa virtuosité, son humour panique, sa violence métaphysique, son génie singulier.
