Erste Auflage des seltenen Dermato-Histologischen Atlas aus der Hand des bekannten Kaposi-Schülers Max Joseph. "In dem histologischen Atlas, welche ich zusammen mit Kollegen Paul Meißner (Berlin 1899) veröffentlichte, haben wir Typen solcher Hauterkrankungen wiedergegeben, welche auf die photographischen Platte ohne jede Retouche das denkbar objektivste Bild darstellen sollten. Natürlich hat diese Methode ihre Licht- und Schattenseiten. Als Vorteil ist zu betrachten, daß unabhängig von dem Darsteller nur die Platte das zur Anschauung bringt, was absolut genommen allein in dem Präparat zu sehen ist. Als Nachteil muß es erscheinen, daß immer nur eine kleine, wenn auch noch so typische Stelle des Präparates mit dieser Methode wiedergegeben werden kann und feinste Detailmalereien ausgeschlossen sind. Daher war es mein Wunsch, in einem zweiten Atlas mit unserer heutigen Färbetechnik so ausgezeichnet darzustellende Einzelheiten auch in die Vervielfältigung durch farbige Zeichnungen wiederzugeben. Das erwies sich als äußerst schwierig, weil vor allen zur Herstellung der Zeichnungen jemand gehörte, der nicht nur Mediziner, sondern auch Maler war. Unter einer großen Reihe von Schülern, welchen ich hin und wieder diesen Plan entwickelte, und welche einige Ansätze dazu machten, fand sich endlich Herr J.B. van Deventer, Oberstabsarzt der Nierderländisch-Ostinidischen Armee in Batavia, welcher mir für diesen Zweck besonders geeignet erschien. Mit ein3m enormen Fleiße verband der Kollege eine hohe zeichnerische Begabung und ein ungemeines Geschick in der Darstellung selbst der schwierigsten Details . Mir bleib nur übrig, den Text zu meinen Präparaten anzufertigen." Vorrede Max Joseph (1860-1932) promovierte 1883 in Königsberg, bildete sich in Wien unter Kaposi aus. Er war später Leiter einer Privatklinik. "Insbesondere in der Zeit vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg bildete seine Praxis einen Anziehungspunkt für Ärzte aus aller Welt, vor allem aus den USA. Scholz (1999) bestätigt, daß in dieser Zeit die außeruniversitäre Dermatologie eine höhere Ausstrahlungskraft hatte als der klinische Bereich der damaligen Charite" (Voswinckel in Fischer III).
