The author traces briefly in broad outline the development of thermodynamics beginning with Francis Bacon and Robert Boyle, and includes low temperature experiments. He was the first to liquefy hydrogen in 1898, reaching a new low-temperature record of ?252 °C (?421.6 °F; 21.1 K).
