Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Harry N. Abrams, in association with the Museum of American Folk Art, the New Museum of Contemporary Art, and the American Center, September 1993. Hardcover. Fine book in a Fine jacket. Only the slightest indications that it is not brand new. Unmarked. Not from a library.…No remainder mark. Not clipped. 160 pages. Illustrated with 122 color and 6 b&w photographs of the artist's paintings, watercolors, sculptures, assemblages. Catalog of an exhibition held at the Museum of American Folk Art, New York, and the American Center, Paris. Essays by Amiri Baraka (LeRoi Jones), Thomas McEvilley ; notes on the works by Paul Arnett and William Arnett ; foreword by Gerard C. Wertkin ; afterword by Henry Pillsbury. A former Alabama steel worker, Dial "made things" without acclaim for the first 60 years of his life. Since his "discovery," the self-taught African American artist has gained international attention. The tiger symbolizes both Dial and the African American male. It acts as protagonist in highly sculptural paintings constructed from found objects, scraps of carpeting, rope, and Bondo. Though the paintings are nearly abstract, close examination reveals a complex narration among the vivid colors, energetic lines, and bold design. McEvilley and Baraka do a good job of explaining the meaning of "outsider art" like Dial's, and through comparisons with figures in conventional art history they validate his work. Enhanced by the fiercely political prose of Baraka and direct quotes from the artist. Thornton Dial (illustrator).

Hardcover. Condition: New. New case-wrapped hardcover. 4to. (8.88 x 0.75 x 10.5 inches) Clean text free of marks or underlining. Color photos on heavy glossy paper throughout the book. Includes artist biographies and a selected bibliography. 184 pp. Fast shipping in a secure book box mailer with tracking. This gorgeous volume ex…plores 62 extraordinary works by 22 contemporary African American artists, revealing a crucial chapter in the story of American art. While the self-taught artists featured in this groundbreaking catalog were born in the Jim Crow period of institutionalized racism, their works embody the promise and attainment of freedom in the modern Civil Rights era and address some of the most profound and persistent issues in American society, including race, class, gender, and spirituality. Originally created as expressions of individual identity and communal solidarity, these eloquent objects are powerful testaments to the continuity and survival of African American culture. This gorgeous book features lush illustrations of works by artists such as Thornton Dial, Bessie Harvey, Purvis Young, and the Gee's Bend quilters--including Gearldine Westbrook, Jessie T. Pettway, and more--and presents a series of insightful essays. Published in association with the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.
