Marie Josephine de Suin (1829-1899) married to become Countess Diana Beausacq, though in literary circles she is known as Countess Diana. Her work 'Maxims of Life' was first published in 1884, and consists of a series of life lessons, or rules of conduct. There is a preface by Sully Prudhomme. The book is bound (by Hatchards of Picadilly) in contemporary full leather boards with gold titling and five raised bands on the spine. The book is in excellent condition and the contents are tight and clean with slight age-browning to the pages. There is no inscription.

Marie Joséphine de Suin, connue sous le nom de ville de Comtesse Diane de Beausacq, et ses noms de plume de Comtesse Diane et Emmeline Raymond (1829 - 1899). Diane de Beausacq tint salon à Paris où elle recevait notamment Jane Dieulafoy, Pierre Loti, Henri Martin, Sully Prudhomme, Jean Aicard, José-Maria de Heredia, . De 1860 à 1902, Elle crée et dirige la revue "La Mode Illustrée" sous le nom de Emmeline Raymond. Très au fait des usages dans le grand monde, elle insite sur les rapports de respects mutuels entre maîtres et servants par une belle formule : "On ne peut exiger le respect ; il est indépendant, comme tous les sentiments : on l'inspire, on ne l'impose pas.".
