Add to basketCondition: Very Good. Movie-themed cartoon character original watercolored rebuses. From the 1930s. Oblong, 14 by 22.5 cm. 27 leaves. Many of the rebuses form the names of Hollywood stars of the day -- Tyrone Power, Ginger Rogers, Wallace Beery, Dorothy Lamour, Janet Gaynor, Bette Davis, etc. The cartoon drawings are done in a s…tyle prevalent among cartoon strips popular in the thirties, some of which continued long after, adhering to the tried and true style -- think "Blondie", "Beetle Bailey", "Nancy", etc. The coloring is absolutely delicious, in its neon-sign brightness, and it brings a sizzle to the drawings. We don't know who Dick Weinert actually was, but in our judgment, the drawings could certainly pass as the work of a professional cartoonist of the day. Less sophisticated, perhaps, are the rebuses, which we would describe as generally cute, but not especially inspired. The fun in them for us is not so much in solving them but rather in peering at the solution and seeing how it was conveyed pictorially. On the front cover there is a name "Betty Foley" written. This might be a clue as to the identity of the creator, for all we know. Condition: wear to the boards, with a few stains. Minor soiling and wear to the leaves within. Hardcover. Heavy cardboard for the boards. Pin clasps binding the boards.
