Hardcover. Condition: Good. The story told in Dickens's great novel, first published in 1861, is a variation on one of literature's great themes: that of a naive, untutored boy from the countryside who comes to the great city to make his fortune and to learn about life. This work's extraordinary appeal is largely due to the brilliant twists Dickens gives to this familiar plot device, especially in gradually revealing the role and identity of the mysterious benefactor who offers the orphaned Pip the opportunity to be brought up 'as a young fellow of great expectations.' 566p.

Binding tight and solid. Charles Dickens's Barnaby Rudge is a vivid portrait of London's descent into anarchy, where 'King Mob' rules the streets, and innocent lives are swept up in the chaos. Set against the backdrop of the Gordon Riots of 1780, Barnaby Rudge is a story of mystery and suspense which begins with an unsolved double murder and goes on to involve conspiracy, blackmail, abduction and retribution. Through the course of the novel fathers and sons become opposed, apprentices plot against their masters and Protestants clash with Catholics on the streets. And, as London erupts into riot, Barnaby Rudge himself struggles to escape the curse of his own past. With its dramatic descriptions of public violence and private horror, its strange secrets and ghostly doublings, Barnaby Rudge is a powerful, disturbing blend of historical realism and Gothic melodrama. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.

First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very good +. First Edition. Octavo, unpaginated (about 50pp.) A very good or better copy in the publisher's green cloth; a tad musty, but clean and sound. A leather sample spine label is affixed to the front paste-down, while three cloth sample labels are affixed to the rear paste-down. Sample illustrations for various books, along with text excerpts and Lang's Introduction are included in the specimen mages. There is also a laid-in leaflet, unevenly age-toned, which contains sales/marketing copy promoting the set, along with a full list of the books. Curiously, we were unable to locate the actual set using the term "Complete Edition" in either auction records or OCLC, indicating either that it was never produced, or that it was produced under a different name. The "Gadshill Edition," also published by Scribner's, seems to have been quite similar when compared to the sample pages herein. In any event, OCLC records just three holdings of this sample book. Though Zinman has some similar sample books for Dickens sets, this one is not in Zinman. A great piece of Dickensiana.

Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Reprint. Reprint, 34 numbered volumes plus additional two volume life of Dickens, very good green cloth hardcovers show exposure toning along spines, dust soil to top page edges, varying degrees of bumping to corners and bowing to covers depending on volume, mild rubbing, scratching and small edge tears to different volumes, along with some other small bits of wear internally including occasional small tear at hinge. Still a pleasing set that features the numerous original illustrations and intro and notes by Lang. 36 volumes total with rough cut edges and top page edges gilt.
