Addressing his book to the Trustees of the National Gallery, Dickes sought to establish that the enigmatic painting was a memorial to the Treaty of Nuremberg of 1532 and of the of the two Palatine brother Counts, Otto Henry and Philipp. Although not accepted by art historians, the similarity of other portraits of the counts with the faces in the Holbein, and Dickes analysis of the complex and deliberate iconography of the painting, is intriguing. 36 b&w illustrations. 4pp ads at rear. Green cloth, rather darkened, with skull detail from the painting in silver on front board. Gilt edges. Some inkstains on rear board and cloth puckered along bottom edge. 1.5cm loss at the foot of the spine around the rear joint.
