Andererseits war es durch die Entdeckung Amerikas und den Aufbau der Kolonien vor allem auf handelsrechtlichem Gebiet führend in Europa. Diego de Covvaruvias a Leyva (1512-1577), europäisch hochgeachteter, spanischer Rechtsgelehrter, dozierte seit 1543 kanonisches Recht an der Universität zu Salamanca und nahm seit 1560 (bis 1563) tätigen Anteil an den Sitzungsperioden des Konzil von Trient. Bei Covvaruvias ist besonders wichtig seine umfassenden Kenntnisse sowohl des römischen wie kanonischen Rechts, aber auch seine moraltheologischen Überlegungen lassen ihn zum führenden katholischen Juristen zu Beginn der Gegenrefomation werden. Seine auch von den Gegnern respektierte hohe jurisistische Kompentenz führten zu einer außerordentlichen Verbreitung seiner Werke.
