Hardcover. Condition: Near fine. First edition. Joan Didion's copy of this book about the history of her hometown, with a note to her in pencil on ruled notebook paper laid in at the front. It reads in full: "26 March 2006, NYC, Dear Joan Didion, I was reading The Year of Magical Thinking at the same time as having a go on my mother's books, trying to prove [indecipherable]--hence the magical connection with a person I don't know, but from Sacramento, and with a grasp of its past + place in the fluidity of California history. And therefore, of course, you may already have it -- in which case, do pass it on. Yours, with all best wishes, and appreciation, Margaret Wilmot." Wilmot is not well known, but she is probably the poet in based in Sussex, England, who was born in California and, like Didion, also attended UC Berkeley. A great association for this book considering Didion's extensive writing about Sacramento in her California memoir Where I Was From and in other places. Quarto in mustard cloth boards, gilt illustration on the front and gilt lettering on spine; gold endpapers; 230 pages, rich with sepia-toned photographs and illustrations throughout, rough cut edges. Very near fine with some nudging to spine tail and a touch of soiling to the spine just there. Lacking the dustjacket. A nice association copy. Signed.

Vintage photograph of director Jerry Schatzberg and cinematographer Adam Holender on the set of the 1971 film. A note affixed on the top edge with scotch tape with manuscript annotations on the verso. An important film of the New Hollywood movement, and one of the best and least moralistic ones made on the subject of drug abuse, in this case heroin. Groundbreaking as a major motion picture in that it used no music, was shot in a "cinema verite" style, and was the first popular film to show actual drug injection. Nominated for the Palme d'Or. Shot on location in New York City. 10 x 8 inches. Wide bottom margin. Near Fine. Grant US. Twilight Time 221.
