Ottima copia di un libro di difficile reperibilità -- Diego Vitrioli (nato a Reggio Calabria nel 1819 e ivi morto nel 1898, il 20 maggio, giorno in cui compiva il suo settantanovesimo anno di età), riportò con Xiphias il primo premio, la gran medaglia d'oro al Certamen bandito dal Reale Istituto di Amsterdam nel 1845, alla sua prima edizione. Ciò gli conferì gloria e fama di grande poeta latino. Si rinnovava così nell'estremo lembo d'Italia la più illustre tradizione umanistica, come dimostrato dall'alto livello della corposa produzione del Vitrioli nella lingua di Roma (Asino Pontaniano', `Elegie', 'Epigrammi', 'Orazioni', 'Epistole', 'Epigrafi'), e dal suo amore per le antichità classiche. Il costante dialogo con gli antichi emerge anche dalle 'Veglie Pompeiane', scritte in italiano aulico, ben lontano dalla lingua e dai moduli letterari romantici. Del Romanticismo fu fiero e sferzante avversario, così come si mostrò intransigente legittimista in politica (quasi totale la sua estraneità al processo unitario) e tradizionalista in religione (fedeltà assoluta alla Chiesa e al Papato). Onorato quale membro di numerose accademie, nella sua città fu direttore della Biblioteca Civica e professore di latino al Real Collegio. D'obbligo pertanto, nel centenario della morte, che Reggio Calabria onori Diego Vitrioli, suo illustre cittadino con un Convegno Nazionale di Studi (15-16 maggio '98) e la ristampa di Xiphias, Epigrammata, Elegiae, nell'auspicio di un sereno e rinnovato interesse per lo studio e la divulgazione della sua opera.
