ILLUSTRATED with 24 full-color panel paintings of Van Eyck with descriptive captions/passages. "The panels ascribed to Jan van Eyck with certainty are all dated between 1432 and 1439. It is remarkable that this series of panels appears to follow after the Mystic Lamb polyptych was finished (6 May 1432). Among the unsigned panels there are several which by their genius and stylistic characteristics show the same "hand". We think especially of the Madonna with Chancellor Rolin, the Virgin in the Cathedral, and the Annunciation (Lugano). Should these panels be dated in this seven-year period, or do they date from the master's first period of activity, i.e. before the Mystic Lamb was finished! As is the case with so many artists of genius no real evolution can be indicated in van Eyck's works, and this makes it so difficult to date the panels mentioned." LPBS.
