Paperback. Condition: New. The Basingstoke Canal was built towards the end of the 'great canal mania' in the eighteenth century. It was intended to provide a transport route to and from London via the Wey and the Thames, but the expectations of its promoters were never realised; no dividends were ever paid to the shareholders and in 1866 the Canal Company declared itself bankrupt. After this the canal had numerous unsuccessful owners, including the New Basingstoke Canal Company, formed in 1947, which ran the canal for twenty years. However, by the late 1960s, the company was proposing to close the uneconomical navigation and sell off parts for building land. The Surrey and Hampshire Canal Society was formed to campaign for its restoration and persuaded the county councils to buy it. A partnership with the Canal Society and other voluntary bodies succeeded in reopening the canal in 1991.The Basingstoke Canal has always enjoyed the affection of the local population and still provides a green corridor for the crowded towns of south-east England through which it now passes, as well as being a haven for wildlife.…

International postal rates are calculated on a book weighing 1 Kilo, in cases where the book weighs less then postage will be reduced accordingly. Where the book weighs more than 1 Kilo increased charges will be quoted. Postage will be reduced on this slim volume. This lavishly illustrated book makes the case for the restoration of an important, and, in its time, vital waterway that linked London to the south coast. Due to the intransigence and obstructive actions on behalf of land owners, work was not possible until 1973 when the land was purchased by Hampshire and later Surrey County Councils. Since then Over the next 17 years the two county councils funded a programme of restoration actively supported by the Surrey and Hampshire Canal Society, the Inland Waterways Association and other canal restoration groups who organised voluntary working parties along the 32 miles of the waterway. The period generated a number of innovative practices, such as the operation of the steam powered dredger Perseverance in Hampshire, manned by volunteers, narrow gauge railway lines supplying work sites, summer voluntary work camps and youth employment training schemes. The protracted project was completed in 1990 and the canal was formally re-opened on 10th May 1991 by HRH the Duke of Kent at Frimley Lodge Park, followed by a weekend of civic celebrations along the entire length of the canal. This book is a fascinating study of the navigation sorely in need of attention illustrated with photographs taken from private collections and published here for the first time. There is also a fold out map tipped in of the canal route and sites of restoration. Ref GG4.…
