An insightful overview of how Millet influenced and inspired many modernist artists that followed him Jean-Francois Millet (1814-1875) was one of the most important artists of the Barbizon School. Through his publicly exhibited works and their critical reception, Millet was of crucial significance to modernist painters. Millet's modernity is evident in his varied subjects-from peasant themes to landscapes to nudes-and his anti-academic, rough paint application. He also produced highly inventive pastels and drawings.Jean-Francois Millet examines the international range of artists whom he influenced. For instance, Millet was an artistic hero for Vincent van Gogh, whose treatment of numerous motifs-including The Sower and Starry Night-was directly inspired by the older artist. Van Gogh even painted a remarkable series of 21 "copies" after Millet's work while living in the south of France in the final year of his life. Other artists on whom Millet had a profound impact include Camille Pissarro, Georges Seurat, Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, and Winslow Homer, and, in the 20th century, most notably Edvard Munch and Salvador Dali.Published in association with the Van Gogh Museum and the Saint Louis Art MuseumExhibition Schedule:Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam (October 4, 2019-January 12, 2020)Saint Louis Art Museum (February 16-May 17, 2020).

Condition: as new. With contributions by Sylvie Crussard and Karen Rechnitzer Pope. Bussum : Thoth Publishers, 2018. Hardcover. 176 pp. Ills. 27 cm. Exhibition, Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, 5 October 2018 -12 January 2019. English text. - In 1887, Paul Gauguin, together with fellow-artist Charles Laval, spent four months on the island of Martinique. Both artists were hoping to find an idyllic environment on the Caribbean island. Using scintillating colours and bold compositions, they captured the island in their paintings and drawings as a primitive and tropical paradise. In doing so they clung to their original ideals while ignoring the harsh everyday reality of a colonized world. Their Martinique works occupy a unique position within the oeuvre of both Gauguin and Laval. And, although their stay on the island was brief, it was nonetheless decisive for their future artistic development. Condition : as new copy. ISBN 9789068687644. Keywords : ART, Gauguin, Paul (1848-1903) Laval, Charles (1862-1894).

Please contact us if you have a question about this title.Author: Michael ClarkeFormat: Paperback Number of Pages: 176Charles Francois Daubigny (1817-1878) was one of the most important French landscape painters of the nineteenth century. This book reassesses his work and examines his importance for the Impressionists, as well as Van Gogh. Daubigny helped to shape Impressionism through his working practice: routinely painting outdoors, often from his studio boat; exploring new subjects and unexpected viewpoints; and developing a radically 'unfinished' style and a brighter palette. He supported the Impressionists at the Paris Salons and introduced both Monet and Pissarro to the art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel. He moved towards a more subjective interpretation of nature in his later sunsets and nocturnes, inspiring not only Monet, but Vincent van Gogh, who spent the last two months of his life close to Daubigny's home and studio at Auvers-sur-Oise. These themes and others are explored through a series of essays that examine his interactions with the young Impressionists, the market response to his paintings, the evolution of his highly original technical processes and his role as the leader of an artists' colony. AUTHOR: Lynne Ambrosini is Director of Collections and Exhibitions and Curator of European Art at the Taft Museum of Art, Cincinnati. Nienke Bakker is Curator of Paintings at the Van Gogh Museum. Rene Boitelle is Senior Paintings Conservator a the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam. Michael Clarke is Director of the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh and is a specialist in French art. Maite van Dijk is Curator of European Paintings at the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam. Frances Fowle holds a joint post as Senior Curator of French Art at the Scottish National Gallery and Lecturer in History of Art at the University of Edinburgh. 140 colour. Paperback.
