Condition: Good. (Antwerp/Bussum: van Ostaijen, Paul/Dinger, W.N., February), (1928)., (1928). Good. - Octavo, 10 inches high by 6-3/8 inches wide. Softcover, bound in printed tan wraps. The wraps are darkened & lightly soiled; There is a piece out of the bottom corner of the front wrap, a tear to its bottom edge & a small piece out at the tail of the spine. 48 pages, with a full-page illustration after a drawing by A. C. Willink. The pages are darkened & there are tears to the bottom margins of 2 pages. Only a good copy of a fragile periodical. Among the contents of this first issue are two poems and a prose piece by Paul van Ostaijen; a prose dialogue, "Zoo leeg een Bestaan", by Eddy du Perron [Charles E. du Perron; 1899-1940]; and three poems by Flemish writer Gaston Burssens [1896-1965]. There are also works by R. Blijstra and W. N. Dinger. Paul van Ostaijen [1896-1928] was a Flemish poet and writer. His nickname was "Mister 1830", because of his habit of walking along the streets of Antwerp dressed as a dandy from the year Belgium became separate from the Netherlands. Though his style was very much his own, his poetry showed influences of Modernism, Expressionism, Dadaism and early Surrealism. He was an active flamingant, a supporter of Flemish independence. Because of his involvement in Flemish activism during World War I, he had to flee to Berlin, a center of Dadaism and Expressionism, where he met many other artists. After he returned to Belgium, he opened an art gallery in Brussels. He died of tuberculosis in March 1928, only a month after the publication of this magazine. Rare.
