Č citato di sfuggita da Teone nel suo commentario all'Almagesto; egli stesso, tra gli autori noti, menziona soltanto Ipsicle (proprio nel De polygonis numeris). Resta quindi aperta un finestra di cinque secoli, dalla fine del II secolo a.C. alla seconda metą del IV della nostra era. Spesso ricordato come 'padre dell'algebra', č considerato per lunga tradizione un autore oscuro per la difficoltą dei suoi teoremi. Č conosciuto soprattutto per l'opera Arithmetica, un trattato (originariamente in tredici libri, di cui ci sono pervenuti i primi sei in greco e altri quattro in traduzione araba) sulle equazioni algebriche e sulla teoria dei numeri. L'opera che qui si presenta, il De polygonis numeris, č invece una teoria matematica dei numeri poligonali su base dimostrativa: sommando serie aritmetiche invece che geometriche, Diofanto ci offre come conseguenza una caratterizzazione delle varie specie di numeri poligonali, che sostituiscono in qualche senso quelli perfetti.
