Resta quindi aperta un finestra di cinque secoli, dalla fine del II secolo a.C. alla seconda metą del IV della nostra era. Spesso ricordato come 'padre dell'algebra', č considerato per lunga tradizione un autore oscuro per la difficoltą dei suoi teoremi. Č conosciuto soprattutto per l'opera Arithmetica, un trattato (originariamente in tredici libri, di cui ci sono pervenuti i primi sei in greco e altri quattro in traduzione araba) sulle equazioni algebriche e sulla teoria dei numeri. L'opera che qui si presenta, il De polygonis numeris, č invece una teoria matematica dei numeri poligonali su base dimostrativa: sommando serie aritmetiche invece che geometriche, Diofanto ci offre come conseguenza una caratterizzazione delle varie specie di numeri poligonali, che sostituiscono in qualche senso quelli perfetti.
