Denis Petau (1583-1652) was a French Jesuit theologian, and one of the best-known scholars of his age, producing works in the fields of chronology, history, philosophy, polemics, patristics, and the history of Christianity. This work is a summary of a larger work he published in 1628, entitled Tabulae chronolgicae. That work was developed alongside of his vast, but unfinished, De theologicis dogmatibus, the first systematic attempt ever made to treat the development of christiana doctrine from an historical point of view. In the front of the book is a bound-in certificate, in Latin and dated 1847, apparently praising the recipient of the book as a diligent student. Several signatures appear on this certificate: J.A.C. Van Hensde. The front paste-down shows evidence of a removed bookplate. Wear to the cover corners.
