[Kupfer] VD17 3:608860N // Pedanius Dioskorides ist einer der bedeutendsten Botaniker und Pharmakologen des Altertums. Er lebte unter Nero und Vespasian als ein Zeitgenosse des älteren Plinius, der an vielen Stellen seiner Naturgeschichte in so auffallender Weise mit Dioskorides übereinstimmt, dass man eine Benutzung des Einen durch den Anderen annehmen zu müssen meint. Von den Lebensumständen des Dioskorides ist uns weiter nichts bekannt, als dass er in seiner dienstlichen Stellung im römischen Heere, wahrscheinlich als Militärarzt, viele Länder zu sehen Gelegenheit hatte, so dass er die von ihm beschriebenen Pflanzen wohl grösstenteils aus eigener Anschauung kannte. (Hirsch, 1962) - Anders als die zuvor übliche alphabetisch oder nach äußerlichen Merkmalen geordnete Behandlung des gesamten Arzneistoffs verwendet Dioskurides erstmals eine Systematik nach der qualitativen Verwandtschaft, der medizinischen Wirksamkeit bzw. pharmakologischen Wirkung der einzelnen Arzneimittel, wobei auch tiermedizinische, magische und nichtmedizinische Verwendungen nicht fehlen. Vorbildcharakter für spätere Kräuterbücher, bis in die frühe Neuzeit hatte mehr noch Dioskurides' Methode der Pflanzenbeschreibung: der Name der Pflanze und Synonyme, Herkunft, botanische Beschreibung, medizinische Eigenschaften, Zeitpunkte der Ernte, Zubereitung und Anwendung, gegebenenfalls auch Hinweise auf Lagerung, Aufdeckung von Verfälschungen usw. [.] Die Arzneimittelkunde des Dioskurides, in zahllosen, immer wieder neuen Bearbeitungen, Paraphrasen und Übersetzungen (lateinisch, syrisch, arabisch, englisch, hebräisch, türkisch und mehr) verbreitet, behauptete für über 1600 Jahre ihre autoritative Geltung in Abendland und Orient auf dem Gebiet der Pharmazie, der Pflanzen- und Drogenkunde und ist als eines der einflussreichsten Werke in der Geschichte der Medizin und Pharmakologie überhaupt zu betrachten. -------- Neben den sieben Büchern des Dioskorides enthält diese Ausgabe auch die Ars Destillandi des Hieronymus Braunschweig, also eine Beschreibung der Arten, wie man Auszüge aus den im Hauptteil beschriebenen Arzneipflanzen anfertigt. // ------------- Unrestaurierter Pergamenteinband der Zeit mit kl.
