Add to basketNo Binding. Condition: Good. HEROLT, Johannes ["Discipulus"]. Sermones Discipuli / Sermones de Sanctis. Original early printed Latin sermon leaf, c.1500, 30.3 x 21.5 cm, printed in two columns in dense Gothic type. One side is headed CXLIX, while the reverse, beneath the running heading "Sermo", introduces a sermon with the prominently printed biblical text "Posui vos ut eatis et fructum afferatis et fructus vester maneat", from John 15:16. The subsequent incipit, "Ista verba quae dominus locutus est discipulis iam loquitur nobis omnibus…", corresponds with institutional manuscript records of Johannes Herolt's sermon collection and securely identifies the underlying text. Johannes Herolt (d.1468), Dominican preacher of Nuremberg and widely known as "Discipulus", was one of the most successful sermon writers of the later Middle Ages; his model sermons circulated extensively in manuscript and were printed more than forty times during the fifteenth century alone. The present sermon develops Christ's injunction that his followers should "go and bring forth fruit", with discussion of Christian conduct, merit, charity, mercy and obligations towards the poor. Numerous editions of Herolt's enormously successful preaching collections appeared around the end of the fifteenth century and beginning of the sixteenth, including documented Lyon editions of 1485 and 1487 and subsequent editions of 1504 and 1510; the precise printing represented by this detached leaf has not been conclusively established and it is therefore responsibly catalogued as c.1500 rather than attributed to an unsupported printer or date. Condition good: general age-toning, scattered spotting and surface marking, some marginal discolouration and minor edge irregularity, a small upper-left edge loss, historical marks and a faint cross towards the lower margin; the printed area remains substantially complete, dark and clearly legible with generous margins. An attractive original survivor from the late-medieval preaching tradition and the formative period of European movable-type printing. …
