Rubbing and slight show through to edges and corners of boards, commensurate with age. Front end paper is creased at spine, with inked names of three previous owners, Rear end paper has hand written recipe for 'Cracknells' (biscuits). and a recipe for ginger beer apparently cut from a Manchester newspaper. The full title of the book is 'The Young Woman's Companion, Or, Frugal Housewife: Containing the Most Approved Methods of Pickling, Preserving, Potting, Collaring, Confectionary, Managing and Colouring Foreign Wines and Spirits, Making English Wines, Compounds, &c. &c. : Also the Art of Cookery, Containing Directions for Dressing All Kinds Butchers Meat, Poultry, Game, Fish, &c. &c. &c. : with the Complete Art of Carving, Illustrated and Made Plain by Engravings : Likewise Instructions for Marketing, with the Theory of Brewing Malt Liquor : to which are Added Directions for Letter Writing, Drawing, Painting, &c. and Several Valuable Miscellaneous Pieces'. That sums it up. The book kis unattributed, but the introduction pages are endorsed as being from 'A Very Distinguished Lady''. The book is dated 1811 and is presumably a first edition. Apart from a little foxing the book is generally clean and tidy throughout and, above all, firm, with no loose pages. Illustrated with six plates.
