Condition: New. Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. Emanual Pavlovich Vizin (illustrator). 1st Edition. Octavo 16.7x11 cm., wrappers, 144pp. Cover design by Emanual Pavlovich Vizin (1904-??). Leonid Ivanovich Dobychin (1894-1936?) is an outstanding prose writer of the first third of the twentieth century. A novel written in the mode of stream of consciousness, contemporaneous with Joyce. In fact he was labeled the Soviet Proust, Balzac, France, Joyce (V.S. Bakhtin, The Fate of the Writer L. Dobychin). "The City En" in 1936 became a target for the ideological campaign against formalism in literature. On March 25 at the Leningrad House of Writers, Dobychin rejected the accusations as "unexpected and regrettable" that his work was recognized as class hostile, and then left the meeting. Three days later he disappeared without a trace, apparently committing suicide. According to a note to Chukovsky that surfaced in the postwar era Dobychin, having pretended to commit suicide, got a job under a different name at a collective farm and spent the war under occupation in Pushkin; after the war he served time in Ekibastuz and again returned to work in the same collective farm. In any case, this work stands alone as a unique soviet fiction from the 1930s. OCLC locates three holdings in North America (Cornell, Stanford, Harvard). Very rare: released in 7500 copies, copies were pulled and destroyed.
