Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First Edition. [5], 6-212 pp., and a big, tall, quarto hardcover format, a massively heavy, oversized volume. Helpful, accessible text in double column, and nearly 150 plates of which 80 are in full, glorious color, mostly being tipped in, and some being full page. A bit of very mild dust soiling along bottom edge, else a virtually pristine interior. Volume contains scholarly apparatus in the form of, e.g., notes, index, and bibliography. Bright and shiny dust jacket, illustrated, showing only very minor wear, protected by a plastic coat, dust jacket not being price-clipped. Housed in a Good condition, still structurally sound but unlovely, moderately worn, illustrated cardboard slip-case. The text is almost as much about New Zealand history as about its painters, sculptors, etchers and collage artists. Gil Docking was Director of the Auckland City Art Gallery in the 1960s.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Reprint. with slip case -tidy copyA.H & A. W. Reed [Published date: 1980].[From front jacket flap] IN 1769 Coo k's Endeavour was off Tolaga Bay on the east coast of New Zealand's North Island .Here Sydney Parkinson, an English painter engaged by Banks to record botanical discoveries, made a pen-and-wash study of A Perforated Rock. This work is the sta rting-point of Gil Docking's zoo-year survey of New Zealand painting, which conc ludes with Brent Wong's Abandoned Settlement (1969), a title that is itself a si lent commentary on the two centuries that separate it from Parkinson's sketch.Gi l Docking, Director of the Auckland City Art Gallery, divides his subject into f our main periods beginning with that of Exploration, during which British and Fr ench painters of varying degrees of ability recorded what they saw during brief visits. The Settlement period follows, beginning withAugustus Earle (1793-1838) a nd ending with J.B. C. Hoyte (1835-1913), during which NewZealand's leading pain ters were, to a man, European-born and seeing the country as a new and quite unf amiliar land. The period of Transition covers the 1870s to the 1920s, and the aut hor opens it with W. M.Hodgkins (1855-98), who arrived in Dunedin from England v ia Australia in 1860. This, the formative era of New Zealand painting, ends with a study of A. W. Walsh (1859-1916), and includes the first generation of New Ze aland painters to be born and brought up in the country. The fourth period is de scribed under the head of New Impulses; it begins with Lots White (b. 1903) an d takes the reader up to 1969. Throughout, Mr Docking has selected the illustrat ions to complement his narrative, so that they are not merely an assemblage of p eriod works but are integrated with his text. The result is an illustrated study.
