Focusing on the American experience, the author traces the historical roots and modern-day manifestations of tax systems, highlighting the interplay of political, economic, and social factors in shaping tax policy. The author contends that taxation systems are not merely technical mechanisms but rather reflect the moral and ethical values, as well as the political and economic priorities, of a given society at a particular moment in time. Drawing examples from a wide range of historical periods and countries, this book endeavors to demonstrate how taxation has been used as a tool for social engineering, economic development, and political control, offering a comprehensive and thought-provoking exploration of the complex relationship between taxation and society. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
