Horse Rustling in County Durham [Manuscript]. [Dodgeson, John]. [Record of Seizure of John Dodgeson's Goods]. County Durham, UK, September 20, [1660s?]. 11-1/4" x 6-1/2" (28.5 x 16.5 cm) sheet, manuscript text in single neat hand to recto. Light toning, minor soiling and creasing, horizontal fold lines. $150. * This document records the seizure of goods from John Dodgeson, witnessed by Elizabeth Dodgeson (presumably his wife) and his son John. Dodgeson was accused of the theft of two horses, information the sheriff's office obtained from his accomplices, Richard Rickaby and Matthew Watson. The two had "run away with the horses," "two of the best horses the Quakers had," "in the night time, with the intention to have sold them." The matter apparently could be resolved if the guilty parties agreed "to deliver them back again and.ask.forgiveness, which they have not yet done.".
