First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good+. Hilary Gilmore (illustrator). 1st Edition. Scarce oversized hardcover, xi + 68 pages, b&w illustrations, NOT ex-library. Light wear, book is clean and bright with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps, firmly bound. Issued without a dust jacket. -- Published in response to the severe damage caused to Kilnasoolagh Church by a lightning strike in November 1991, this locally produced history documents a Church of Ireland place of worship situated half a kilometre west of Newmarket-on-Fergus in County Clare, on a site where Christian worship has taken place since at least 1256. The text traces the parish's origins from medieval ecclesiastical records, including papal mandates and the separation of Kilnasoolagh from Bunratty parish in 1463, through the turbulent post-Reformation period and into the 18th and 19th centuries. Drawing extensively on vestry minute books from 1765 onwards, it reconstructs the parish's administrative and financial history, including the rebuilding of the church in 1815 with a loan from the Board of First Fruits. The account examines the close relationship between the church and the O'Brien family of nearby Dromoland (the Barons Inchiquin), whose baroque memorial to Sir Donat O'Brien by the master sculptor William Kidwell dominates the chancel, and traces the impact of disestablishment in 1871 on parish life. Architectural and liturgical features of the interior are described, including stained glass windows, silver, and commemorative plaques, which collectively document the social hierarchy and ancestral history of the Newmarket-on-Fergus area. Original drawings by Hilary Gilmore illustrate the building and its details. Beyond the architecture, the work serves as a genealogical resource, offering information on prominent local families, including Colpoys of Ballycar House, Studdert of Newmarket House, Scott of Carrigerry House, Creagh of Caherbane House, Fitzgerald of Carrigoran House, Hickman of Fenloe House, O'Brien of Dromoland, and others. It includes a complete list of vicars from 1256 to 1991 and a succession of bishops dating back to the 11th century. An appendix provides details of churchyard interments from 1784 onwards, making this an essential record for those researching Irish local history, ecclesiastical architecture, and regional genealogy. -- "Within this book one may follow the course of events which occurred in one of Clare's most beautiful parish churches, Kilnasoolagh Church. History on this early Christian site dates back to the 13th century and can be followed through to the present day. The illustrations and photographs depict some of the features and memorials which adorn this hallowed place, among them the memorial by Sir William Kidwell, erected in memory of Sir Donat O'Brien, Baronet, of Leamaneh and Dromoland.".
