The story of the WWI service of the SMS Mowe, merchant raider of the Imperial German Navy, told by its commander, Count Nokolaus zu Dohna-Schlodien (1879-1956). The Mowe & its commander were much celebrated in Germany for their wartime actions. These included setting minefields in various enemy areas, including near Scapa Flow and in the Gironde Estuary, resulting in the sinking of Allied ships, the capture & scuppering of the British ship, Clan Mactavish, and the sinking of several other Allied ships. On return to Germany Dohna-Schlodien was awarded the Iron Cross second class. The name Möwe translates as Seagull. In German.
