(Murphy & Goff 681) 'When it was suggested to me that certain papers of mine contributed between the years 1935 and 1943, dealing with early research into Bantu languages, should be republished and issued under one cover, I readily agreed. I had, however, been for some years retired from the University, and recognized that my findings of 1943 were far from being up-to-date. At my request, my successor in the Chair of Bantu Languages in the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, prepared a statement on the position of "African Linguistic Studies" to bridge the period from 1943 to 1960, and I am pleased that that paper, and one other by Professor D. T. Cole, are included herewith. There is appended a final paper dealing with Scripture Translation into Bantu Languages, which links up a specialized work of many men to whom reference is made in the earlier papers.'- From Doke's Prefatory Note.…
