Welwitsch nasceu na Áustria em 1806 e doutorou-se em medicina, na Universidade de Viena, especializando-se na cólera. Chega a Lisboa em 1839 onde é colocado no Jardim Botânico da Ajuda como demonstrador e conservador. Em 1850 propõe ao Ministério do Ultramar uma expedição a Angola. Encontra-se com Livingston no interior de África em 1854. Em 1859 descobre a planta a que chamará Welwitschia.
