The Ephrata Community was founded in 1732 by a small group of sectarians under the leadership of Johann Conrad Beissel, a German immigrant fresh from the Continental centers of religious dissent. During the administration of its founder and that of his faithful disciple and successor, Peter Miller [ev. Müller], the settlement became an important cultural center." (etc.; p.
