Il celebre geologo delle Alpi, che nel 1781 aveva scalato l'Etna e visitato l'arcipelago di Aelion, viaggiò nel febbraio e marzo 1784 nella zona colpita dal disastroso terremoto del 1783. La sua attenzione si concentra su aspetti trascurati nei numerosi opuscoli e cronache pubblicati su questo evento, e spiega scientificamente gli effetti eccezionali delle violente scosse sul paesaggio e sulla natura del paese.  Tra pag. 58 e 70 di questa edizione Dolomieu tratta di Messina e del terremoto in Sicilia: "La scossa, che avvenne durante la notte del 5 febbraio, aumentò i danni di Messina, di Reggio e delle città che erano già state scosse dal primo . Il terremoto del 28 marzo aumentò i disastri di Messina . L'ondulazione si estese dalla punta della Sicilia fino oltre il capo di Rosacolmo . Prendiamo per esempio l'Etna . immense cavità sotterranee, poiché il monte Etna, elevandosi per l'accumulo delle sue eruzioni, ha dovuto lasciare all'interno della terra dei vuoti proporzionati alla sua massa . La città di Messina, costruita su una spiaggia bassa, ha subito uno scuotimento che non hanno affatto risentito gli edifici situati sulle alture . Se dunque l'Etna è stato la causa occasionale dei terremoti". Ottimo esemplare di opera rara. ?La metodologia scientifica di Dolomieu, espressa attraverso le sue ricerche sui vulcani italiani, adottava gli elementi essenziali della geologia della fine del XVIII secolo: il viaggio scientifico e il lavoro dettagliato sul campo; le competenze mineralogiche e la conoscenza pratica delle miniere; lo studio comparato delle montagne e dei vulcani [.] La percezione della grande complessità, del numero e della varietà dei fenomeni geologici aveva allontanato Dolomieu dalle teorie generali della Terra. Egli cercò la soluzione ai problemi geologici attraverso i viaggi. Spine with gilt ornamental bands and floral vignettes. = Dieudonné Guy Sylvain Tancrède, known as Déodat Gratet de Dolomieu (1750-1808) was a famous geologist during the end of the 18th century and Napoleonic time. He was one of the scientist of the Expédition d'Egypte and the geological institute and museum in Grenoble is named after him too, as is the mineral Dolomite, which in turn gave its name to the Dolomites, a considerable mountain range in the Italian Alps. In this very rare work, a repaginated offprint from the Journal de physique du mois de novembre 1791, he gives an overview of different types of minerals and rocks. Provenance: stamp of the rich, geological and mineralogical Élie de Beaumont library in the lower margin of the title page, next to a stamp of the Société des Mines de Nouzilleras. Some light foxing to a few leaves, otherwise an excellent copy, attractively bound. Ward and Carozzi.

Edges yellow. = First German edition of an important contribution, which combines several sciences - including volcanology and physics - to the geology of the Mediterranean island volcanoes north of Sicily, including Lipari, Vulcano, and Stromboli. The author, Dieudonné Sylvain Guy Tancrède de Dolomieu, usually known as Déodat de Dolomieu (1750-1801) was an influential French geologist; the rock and mineral dolomite were named after him. In the present work, which was translated from the original French published in the same year, the author also describes the islands of Ustica and Pentellaria [= Pantellaria], and the peculiar Macaluba mud-volcano on Sicily. Later in his life de Dolomieu became involved in political troubles during the French Revolution, and was later imprisoned for nearly two years in Tarente, when France was at war with the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.
