Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. A very clean copy with a gift inscription. Heaps More Gradys People is the fourth book by Don Grady in the popular Gradys People series. Following on from the acclaimed Gradys People in 2000, More Gradys People in 2003 and Still More Gradys People in 2005, Don has assembled another collection of stories and photographs about fascinating people in the top of the South Island. The first and largest chapter features the late Duncan Rutherford of Richmond who had a collection of over 300 cars and other motor vehicles. This wealthy bachelor spent most of his life acquiring cars of all ages and types and was constantly faced with the challenge of providing adequate storage for them. Also featured is Blue Derry who spent 20 years driving bulldozers on the West Coast before venturing into the grocery business and becoming the proprietor of the Springlands Shopping Centre in Blenheim - along the way he became a champion jet boat racer. Other interesting characters include Woody Woodward, a former member of the Sunday Creek Commune near Dovedale who now runs an arts and carving gallery at Marahau, along with another carver known simply as Bones who teaches kids in Takaka how to create bone carvings. The story of Grub, the last survivor of the Happy Sam Commune in the Anatoki Valley near Golden Bay, and the adventurous life of Bill Simpson despite losing half of his right foot in a bush accident at the age of 33 are also in this volume. Albert Guards life in the remote Kakapo Bay, the last surviving grand-child of the first shore-based whaler Captain Jacky Guard and his wife Betty who arrived in the bay in 1830, is also included along with the late Margaret Fox who was based at Farewell Spit lighthouse during the Second World War with her lighthouse keeper husband. This is Don Gradys tenth book.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Some light rubbing to the board edges. The jacket is very good. For the men who came into southern Pacific waters in search of whales and seals, life was full of cruel hardship. The rugged coastlines and tempestuous storms were as bad as any in the world, and the perils of harpooning whales in small open boats were not made easier by the treacherous, chilly ocean. Discipline aboard ship was always brutal and life ashore was lawless and violent. When they did find peace and safety, the sealers and whalers also suffered deprivation and loneliness.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. The Perano Whalers of Cook Strait, 1911-1964 By Don Grady. Publisher: A.H. & A.W. Reed Ltd., Wellington, 1982. FIRST EDITION. Very good hardback with jacket, binding firm, bumping and rubbing to edges/corners, no inscriptions, pages very good, minor marks. Jacket has shelf-wear, chipping and creasing. 238 pages, illustrated. The Perano family operated shore whaling stations inside the narrow entrance to Tory Channel in Cook Strait, utilising small high speed whale chasing boats. This extensively illustrated book is an outstanding chronicle of a unique industry. The Peranos' kind of whaling involved small, high-speed chasers which sometimes actually mustered humpback whales like a shepherd's dog rounds up sheep, driving them into the narrow entrance of Tory Channel for killing and processing at their shore factory. In compiling this book Christchurch journalist Don Grady interviewed more than 80 former whalers employed by the Peranos and examined thousands of old diaries, records and photographs. Grady's extensively illustrated book is an outstanding chronicle of a colourful era in New Zealand's history, an immensely readable "inside story" of a unique industry and a unique way of life. ALL PHOTOS ARE OF THE ACTUAL BOOK. All books are sent with free courier postage within New Zealand.
