Add to basketPaperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This is a short story, with pen and ink illustrations by the author, about a small pine tree which was cut down as a Christmas tree. It was very small and not mature or filled out with fine branches and needles like the other trees being cut down for sale in the city. It is a story of rejection by the public of the little, not fully grown, tree and its eventual triumph. The book is child friendly and an illustration leads each paragraph. The images are simple and a child can easily follow the story just by looking at the illustrations. This item is printed on demand. All illustrations are painted by the author and have inspired the poems which accompany them. Most of the poems do have a life lesson and are based on my experiences as a child. Add to basketPaperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Claytonville is a small community in central Illinois in the center of farm country. It has lost most of its businesses over the years because of the automobile and lack of job opportunities. But, it still has people who are good and kind. In these smaller farm communities they were still insulated from the harsh realities of those living in the big citiies because most farmers and people in town were still raising gardens and canning their harvests. City folk did not have that advantage. They, also, hadn't lost that many jobs because businesses were small and served the local population. The depression was still affecting them, though, with burglaries and theft. With Prohibition still the law, many ordinary people had to resort to making alcohol to sell to make ends meet. This was prompted primarily in 1931 because of extreme heat, poor crops and low prices for those crops. People did whatever they had to do in order to keep their families feed and the tax collector at bay. Foreclosures were becoming more common, as well as the closure of several local banks that didn't have the cash flow to keep their doors open. Hard times were upon them. Add to basketPaperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Claytonville is a small community in central Illinois in the center of farm country. It has lost most of its businesses over the years because of the automobile and lack of job opportunities, but it still has people who are good and kind. During 1930 Claytonville had several thriving businesses and a population that was willing to help others during the "Great Depression". Having not converted to mechanical means of farming and everyone owning an automobile, these people were very self-sufficient and fared far better than those individuals living in cities. This book contains articles pertaining only to the Claytonville and surrounding vicinities. These items allow you to follow ancestors on a week by week basis, which will help those interested in genealogy. I have included the Cissna Park Community High School yearbook for 1930. Students from Claytonville attended the Cissna Park school once they graduated from their "one room" schoolhouse. This item is printed on demand. Add to basketPaperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This is volume I of II and contains the yearbooks for Cissna Park Community High School for the years 1924, 1926, and 1927. There was no yearbook for 1925. The covers have been cleaned and each page totally restored. Where typesetting was poor, or damaged, I cloned letters to make the text more readable. Every photo has been retouched and are better than those in the original books. The students in these books are young, proud, and innocent. The upperclassmen are looking toward graduation and bright futures. The grade school children are just beginning to learn about the world and maturing with each passing year. They, too, are dreaming of graduating and becoming successful, productive adults. While looking at these photos and reading their words of optimism, keep in mind this single thought, these students are going to fight and suffer the tragedies of WWII. War is the farthest thought passing through their minds. They are still innocent and vaguely understand the stories of their parents and teachers about The Great War. This item is printed on demand. Add to basketPaperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Cissna Park is a small town in central Illinois in the center of farm country. It still has the character of the old days when neighbors helped each other out of hard times, or would just have them over for dinner. During 1930 Cissna Park was not hit as hard by the stock market crash as the cities because the population hadn't switched over to the mechanized world with farm tractors and cars, although the change was beginning. Instead, most of the population was still canning the vegetables and fruits from their gardens and orchards. They were self-sufficient, but not rich. The book is edited from "The Cissna Park News", a weekly paper, and I selected articles that would be of historical interest and also relevant to today. I also included as much genealogy related material as possible so researchers could follow their ancestors from this area on a week by week basis. This item is printed on demand. It still has the character of the old days when neighbors helped each other out of hard times, or would just have them over for dinner. During 1931 the depression is just beginning to affect Cissna Park. Being a farm town, most of the businesses were still able to operate at a profit and serve the surrounding population. Things were not totally secure, though, there was an increase in burglaries and theft. Several area banks were forced to close because of low cash flow. People were still raising gardens and canning the harvest. Farmers had mixed results with crops; some did well, others not because of the extreme heat of summer. Also, the farmers were organizing in co-ops in order to get higher prices for their crops. As in most depression periods, some did well, while others struggled to feed and clothe their families. The Cissna Park community did organize to help those in need. That was just the right thing to do. This item is printed on demand.
