Ouvrage de référence sur le site paléontologique du Serrat d'En Vaquer. Les fossiles découverts par le Docteur Albert Donnezan ont été étudiés par Charles Depéret, titulaire de la Chaire de Géologie à la Faculté des Sciences de Lyon. Certains fossiles du Pliocène du Roussillon sont particulièrement remarquables : le singe Dolichopithecus ruscinensi, la tortue Testudo perpiniana, le renard Vulpes donnezani, l'ours Ursus arvernensis, la gazelle Gazella borbonica, le cerf Cervus ruscinensis . Ces fossiles sont les restes d'animaux ayant vécu pendant le Pliocène, période de l'histoire de la Terre comprise entre -5,3 et -1,65 millions d'années. Ces restes ont été conservés dans des sédiments continentaux, fluviatiles et lacustres. Le Pliocène du Roussillon doit sa notoriété à la richesse de cette faune de vertébrés fossiles.
