He had already covered the epic Allied assault on Monte Cassino in Italy and went on to crash-land across the Rhine with elite American airborne forces, beat advancing British troops into Hamburg and file early reports from Belsen concentration camp. His determination to be first with the news, then and always, made him something of a legend at Reuters, arguably the greatest of the world's news agencies. Within two decades he had become its editor and deputy general manager. By then, with characteristic dash and brio, he had reported some of the other great news stories of the era, including Gandhi's assassination from New Delhi and Mao Tse-tung's civil war meetings with Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek in Chungking. This autobiography has also been tapped out with that crisp and colourful urgency which characterised his.
