Bound in the original reddish-orange pictorial wraps, lettered in blue. From the unattributed Google book review: "This book was written between 1917 and 1921, when T. H. Hildebrandt was communicating with his friend Dora E. WareÂ. There is an image of Dora Ware and Theophil Hildebrandt on the [front] cover. Dora had finished a postgraduate year at the University of Michigan in the Botany Department, Theophil was Instructor in Mathematics in the Engineering College. An expert pianist and organist, he joined his colleague in the Engineering Math Department in playing Beethoven and Brahms violin sonatas with his colleague E. Switzer Allen for friends, one of whom was Dora Ware. Switzer Allen was under suspicion of being non supportive of the war with Germany and lost his job due to the anti-German frenzy of the time. Dora moved to Maryland to teach in the Delaware Women' College and they continued to correspond. The letters were newsy, chatty and delightful, with many references to the local Ann Arbor scene They were married, had four children, lived in Dora's aunt's house The transcriber, Doctor H. Mark Hildebrandt, one of their children, is a retired pediatrician who still lives in the family home. Tension of being suspected of disloyalty is clearly brought out. In fact, T. H. Hildebrandt did serve in the Army as an instructor at the Field Artillery Officer's Training School in Camp Zachary Taylor, Louisville, KY." . INSCRIBED / SIGNED by H. M. Hildebrandt. 1st ed? (No additional printings listed). Softcover. Near Fine condition. Illus. by NOT a library discard. vi, 572pp. Great Packaging, Fast Shipping. 1st ed? (No additional printings listed).
