EDGES OF BLOCK ARE DUST STAINED.THE OPEN PAGES ARE MOSTLY QUITE GOOD FOR AGE, WITH LITTLE EVIDENCE OF FOXING. TISSUE GUARD TO FRONTIS IS BROWNED. THE SEWN BINDING IS STRAINED IN SOME PLACES. CRACKED BETWEEN PAGES 112-113. HINGES WEAK INTERNALLY, SO THERE IS SOME PLAY IN THE SPINE. THE LISTING OF PLATES/MAPS IS RATHER CONFUSING. ONLY SOME OF THE ILLUSTRATIONS ARE LISTED. SOME APPEAR TO HAVE SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT TITLES, e.g. THERE IS ONE LISTED AS "AN IMAGINARY VIEW OF SEVILLE", BUT THE ILLUSTRATION IN THE BOOK IS CALLED "A SPANISH PORT". ONE IS LISTED AS THE "ISLAND OF ORMUZ". THE ILLUSTRATION IN THE BOOK IS " ISLE DORMUS", SOME ARE LISTED OUT OF SEQUENCE , AND IN ONE CASE ( THE MAP OF ANTILLES AND GULF OF MEXICO) IT IS LISTED AS BEING IN PART I OF THE BOOK BUT ACTUALLY APPEARS IN PART II. I THINK BINDERS TOOK LIBERTIES WITH THE SEQUENCE IN WHICH THEY BOUND THE ILLUSTRATIONS IN 19TH CENTURY BOOKS. THE TITLE PAGE SUGGESTS A TOTAL OF 109 BUT I HAVE COUNTED 108. THERE IS A FRONTISPIECE, AND AN ENGRAVING ON THE TITLE PAGE, SO MAYBE ONE OF THESE IS COUNTED IN THE TOTAL. THE BROWN HARD COVERS ARE WORN ON EDGES AND CORNERS, A BIT GRUBBY. The wrappers are detached as are most of the pages but the issue is complete, edgewear with chips and tears to the brittle paper, and toning, a good only copy. Samuel, and more including an excerpt from "Il Marzocco" an Italian review of *A Portrait of the Artist As a Young Man* by James Joyce, translated from the Italian into English by Joyce himself (Slocum and Cahoon, C52). The review is quite positive and enthusiastic, one passage reads, in part, "His book is not alone an admirable work of art and thought; it is also a cry of revolt: it is the desire of a new artist to look upon the world with other eyes, to bring to the front his individual theories and to compel a listless public to reflect that there are another literature and another esthetic apprehension beyond those foisted upon us.".
