Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. TEXTBOOK OF ABNORMAL PSYCHOLOGY, Roy M. Dorcus and G. Wilson Shaffer, hardcover, 4th printing of 1934 first edition, illustrated, 1037. BOOK CONDITION: good. The text block and illustrations are in good condition with no dogears or tears, but there are underlined sentences and occasional ma…rginal notes. Pages and endpapers are age-toned. The signature of a prior owner is written inside the front cover. This is not a library book or remainder. The green boards are in good condition (bumped spine, shelf wear). 9 x 6, 389 pages, 32 ounces. XX [Foreword by KNIGHT DUNLAP] Without reflecting any discredit on the pioneer treatises on this topic, it can fairly be said that the present volume marks the beginning of an epoch. In fact, I am strongly inclined to believe that the volume signalizes the beginning of the scientific era in abnormal psychology, The authors, it would appear, have produced a work which is in line with the foundations laid by Pierre Janet, and infused with the spirit of the great French pathologist. While the work of Janet has necessarily been restricted to the clinical aspects, the present authors have coordinated therewith the contributions of general and experimental psychology; thus producing a structure worthy of its foundation. I am impressed, in the first place, with the vast amount of materials collected in this volume. No other book has attempted such a task. Obviously, this is a sharp departure from the conventional type of psychology text, in which "easy steps for little feet" has become more and more the rule. In conjunction with the literature-references, which are of extraordinary definiteness, the book furnishes a starting point from which the really industrious student may branch out into any subtopic in this complicated field. In the second place, I am impressed with the critical balance of the book. Giving the various isms and theories their places, the authors avoid imposing on the reader either isms or emotional anti-isms (which is more than I can say for my own writings). Without being subjected to the stress of violent iconoclasm, the reader is prepared for immunity to both pseudo-psychological novelties and ancient superstitions. There are various points of interpretation, of course, on which I should take issue with the authors; and on some of these points I should possibly be right. These features of the presentation, however, increase my appreciation of, and respect for, the whole. The authors, and the psychological profession are to be congratulated on this magnum opus, which demonstrates, among other things, that scientifically minded psychiatrists and psychologists can work together in harmony and fruitfulness: for, it should be said, this book has a history which is not superficially obvious; and in that history, Dr. Chapman has played a part of no small importance.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 3rd Edition. Textbook of Abnormal Psychology (Third Edition), authored by Roy M. Dorcus and G. Wilson Shaffer, and published by The Williams & Wilkins Company. This particular volume is from the 1945 copyright edition, issued as a 1946 printing. The book is bound in its original dark maroon… cloth boards with bright, distinct gilt lettering stamped cleanly along the spine. The exterior shows standard shelf wear appropriate for its age, including minor rubbing to the corners, light scuffing on the faces of the boards, and gentle softening at the spine ends. The binding remains sturdy and intact. Internally, the pages are clean, square, and free of prominent underlining, highlighting, or marginal notes, though there is mild age-toning present throughout the text block. No dust jacket is included. This is a fantastic, highly collectible resource and a great addition to any library focused on the historical development of clinical psychology and psychiatric medicine. Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. [From the library of noted scholar Richard A. Macksey.] 1948 printing. Hardcover and dust jacket. Jacket clipped. Good binding and cover. Shelf wear. Pages unmarked. xv, 547 pages : illustrations, diagrams ; 24 cm. "Abnormal phenomena are approached through consideration of the normal; clinical a…spects are coordinated with the contributions of general and experimental psychology. The reciprocal effects of recent advances in psychology on the one side, and medicine, neurology, and psychiatry on the other, find expression in the complete revision and rearrangement of the book." "Richard A. Macksey was a celebrated Johns Hopkins University professor whose affiliation with the university spanned six and a half decades. A legendary figure not only in his own fields of critical theory, comparative literature, and film studies but across all the humanities, Macksey possessed enormous intellectual capacity and a deeply insightful human nature. He was a man who read and wrote in six languages, was instrumental in launching a new era in structuralist thought in America, maintained a personal library containing a staggering collection of books and manuscripts, inspired generations of students to follow him to the thorniest heights of the human intellect, and penned or edited dozens of volumes of scholarly works, fiction, poetry, and translation." - Johns Hopkins University.
