The book is in very good condition with two quarter- to one-inch- surface cracks at either end of front joint, mild surface soil to the spine mostly apparent due to its light background, and no other edgewear, good hinges, sound text block, very clean pages free from names or other markings. The scarlet red slipcase is in good condition with conspicuous edgewear including a vague quarter-inch fade line around its opening and some surface soil (more pronounced on the rear side than on the front). . Internally very good clean tight sound square, no bookplate, inscriptions or marks of any kind, well held in joints and hinges, slightly tender to head of upper. Very good in bright gilt lettered ruled and illustrated Morocco leather bound over wide weave, gilt embossed cloth, bright gilt dentelles to both boards at leather corners and spine. Great shelf presence featuring 5 bright gilt ruled raised bands and 5 gilt floral scrolled decorated compartments, corners and spine very gently rubbed, all edges very bright gilt. A most handsome volumes and a great addition to the library of reader, scholar and collector alike, or a good gift. Croqumitaine is a bogeyman liable to bite or eat the hands and noses of children (those parts most susceptible to frostbite!). Tales of Croqumitaine were told in order to scare children and make them thus wiser. Ernest LEpine weaves an epic tale of the exploits of Emperor Charlemagne with the Saracens. Mitaine, a brave young girl, stands against a dark faceless enemy.

But the idea of the work is healthy and useful: far from telling children the frightening and silly stories that they dream of at night, the two collaborators have shown here how Croque-Mitaine, very amusing as a fable, doesn't exist as a story at all.
