Brillant tacticien, Charles Graindorge d'Orgeville, baron de Mesnil-Durand (1735-1799), fut colonel au régiment Navarre infanterie et resta au service du roi jusqu'à la Révolution en qualité de maréchal de camp commandant les régiments d'Ile-de-France et Lorraine.Le baron Mesnil-Durand avait à peine vingt ans lorsqu'il publia sous l'anonymat, son traité militaire ; divisé en 15 chapitres, son Projet d'un Ordre françois en tactique, a pour objet de substituer pour l'ordre de bataille, au système qui était en usage des bataillons minces composés de 685 hommes alignés directement, des colonnes de 768 hommes à 24 de front et 32 de hauteur. L'auteur accompagne chacune de ces colonnes (qu'il désigne sous le nom de Plésions) de deux peletons de grenadiers, formés chacun de 48 hommes à 3 de hauteur, et qui s'établiraient à quelques pas en arrière sur le flanc des Plésions. Il place ensuite deux petites troupes de cavalerie, chacune de 24 hommes sur deux rangs en arrière des grenadiers. L'auteur donna à ce Projet une Suite en 1758.Mesnil-Durand défend et explique ainsi fermement la théorie de l'ordre profond, qui avait été entrevue quelques années plus tôt par le chevalier Folard et par le Maréchal de Saxe dans ses Rêveries. Folard avait en effet cru voir dans la profondeur de l'ordonnance de bataille des Grecs, la principale cause de la supériorité stratégique qu'il leur attribuait sur les tacticiens modernes. La polémique entre partisans de l'ordre profond en colonne et partisans de l'ordre traditionnel mince, fut accrue dans les années 1770, suite aux objections du chevalier Tronçon du Coudray et aux travaux du comte Guibert sur les progrès de l'artillerie. La discussion ayant acquis plus de vigueur et une telle ampleur dans les milieux militaires, le gouvernement décida alors de mettre à l'épreuve les deux systèmes stratégiques ; il les fit expérimenter au camp de man?uvre de Vaussieux, en réunissant 30000 hommes confiés au maréchal de Broglie pour l'ordre profond, au général Luckner pour l'ordre mince. Mais le résultat fut défavorable à Mesnil-Durand. Si les résultats ne furent donc pas concluants pour le système en colonne, ils permirent de faire évoluer la pensée militaire au XVIIIe siècle.
