BOOK CONDITION: very good. The text block and illustrations are in fine condition, with no tears, dogears, or marks. No bookplate but the signature of a prior owner is written inside the front cover. Not a library book or remainder. The red cloth boards are in good condition (slight shelf wear on bottom edge and slightly bowed back board). The dust jacket is in good condition (small tear on front bottom edge, crinkled edges, first inner flap has a big crease). 8 ½ 6 ¾, 67 pages, 11 ounces XX [From the inner flap] The origin of folk art lies in the desire to beautify objects used in daily life and in religious cults and to give them a character of their own by using the various materials and handicraft skills available. As a result of many different influences which have all helped to determine the character of Mexican folk art, its forms of expression are extremely manifold. While many motifs can be traced back to the old Indian cultures, others either resulted from or were influenced by the Spanish conquest and the Christianization of Mexico. 28 color plates reveal the wealth of this folk art, and the introduction by Gerd Dorner gives the reader an interesting insight into the life and mentality of the people of Mexico.
