Hardcover. Condition: Fair. Ex-library. Original sage green cloth binding with gilt lettering on maroon inked spine. Spine is worn at edges and at catalog number. Light scuffing to boards and corners. Contains the marks of the Gary Memorial Library at Vermont College, and the Heaton Hospital Nurse's Library, including bookplate and stamps. Minor dampstaining to pages. This midcentury book was intended to help nurses understand their career options in an accessible and personal way, with advice about professional growth, weighing advantages and disadvantages to particular jobs, details about how to apply to openings, and bibliographies for further research. It is told in part through conversations with nurses in different careers, and it provides typical days and schedules for rural and urban work, different medical specialties, private and public practice, and more. It also includes anecdotal information from other nurses about their salaries, accommodations, and opportunities for promotion. Dorothy Deming (1893-1972) was an American nurse and writer who wrote the Penny Marsh books on public health nursing as a career. She was born in New Haven, educated at Vassar College, and went on to attend Yale before graduating from the Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in New York in 1920. In 1924 Deming was the first director of the Holyoke Visiting Nurse association, then became the assistant to the director of the National Organization for Public Health Nursing in 1927. She edited the journal Public Health Nursing between 1935 and 1942. From the nursing history collection of Sarah Abrams. Hardcover, acceptable condition. 351 pages, octavo.

A set of three (3) printed booklets issued by National Tuberculosis Foundation with home care instructions for three different parties: the patient, the nurse, and the family. Together, the booklets offer a complete view of what home care looks like for someone suffering from the disease. The booklets stress the importance of rest, proper nutrition, and protecting others by limiting contact with babies or small children and not sharing food. The nurse is given specific instructions on how to prepare the sick room and take care of the patient. The family is instructed in many of the same tasks, as well as in "Keeping Up Your Patient's Courage". Provides interesting insight into patient care in the 1940s at a time when Tuberculosis was a major public health concern. Each is a single vol. (9" by 6"), pp. 16 (Patient), 32 (Nurse), and 64 (Family), all bound in original colored wrps with line drawn illustration of an open door to a bedroom on the front. Each includes line-drawn in-text illustrations related to the subject where appropriate. Ink stamps of Southern Worcester County Health Association. Lacks booklet in the series for the physician. Very good to near-fine Light sunning, the occasional spot.
