Dorr (born September 11, 1939) is an author and retired senior American diplomat who has authored 70 books and numerous articles on international affairs, military issues and the Vietnam War. Dorr served in the United States Air Force in Korea (1957-60) and spent 24 years as a Foreign Service Officer (1964-89) with the U.S. State Department. Dorr published his first magazine article in 1955 (age 16). In 2010, he was given an Achievement Award by the Air Force Historical Foundation for his work for the foundation and its magazine, Air Power History. "Hell Hawks" sets a new standard for histories of the tactical anti-war in Europe. The authors combine masterfully crafted interviews with the broader picture of the air war fought by the Thunderbolt men. The "Hell Hawks" were the men and machines of the 365th Fighter Group. Beginning just prior to D-Day, June 6, 1944, the groups young pilots flew in close support of Eisenhower's ground forces as they advanced across France and into Germany. They flew the rugged, heavily armed P-47 Thunderbolt. Living in tents amid the cold mud of their front-line airfields, the 365ths daily routine had much in common with that of the G.I.s they supported. Their war only stopped with the Nazi surrender on May 8, 1945. The Hell Hawks paid a heavy price to win the victory. Sixty-nine pilots and airmen died in the fight across the continent. The Groups 1,241 combat missions -- the daily confrontation of sudden, violent death -- forged bonds between these men that remain strong sixty years later.

Condition: very good condition. Crowood Aviation Series - - First Edition - - The Bell Airacobra, with its distinctive shape and features, is an aeroplane that has taken more than its share of criticism. Although unsuited to fighting at altitude, it was an excellent gun platform for low-level work and a fine ground-attack aeroplane. - Its handling has come in for adverse comment, but it was fast and very heavily armed for its time. It was also able to absorb considerable punishment. - Robert F. Dorr tells the story of Bell's Cobras, from their design and introduction, through their use in the Far East and Russia, to their eventual retirement, in this welcome addition to the Crowood Aviation Series. 159 p. many photos Hardcover with dust jacket, large format.
